Guide to Cabinet Hardware Installation

Congratulations on picking out the perfect cabinet hardware. Whether you’ve chosen cabinet knobs or pulls, a new and refreshing look for your kitchen is right around the corner. All that stands between you and the kitchen of your dreams is the installation of your purchase. At Kitchen-Cabinet-Hardware, we strive to make each step of the process as easy for you as possible. Read on to learn about how to simplify the cabinet hardware installation process and achieve flawless results on every door and drawer.

Installing cabinet hardware is a relatively simple process. All it takes are some tools and some patience, and you can transform your cabinets from functional to fabulous. You will need:
1. a drill with a 3/16” drill bit (in most cases)
2. level
3. marker
4. masking tape
5. a nail or center punch for making an impression on which to start the drilling
6. screwdriver (either Phillips or straight head, depending on the type of screws you are using)
Knobs are easier to install than handles because they only require one screw instead of two. For the easiest type of installation application, look for knobs that come with the screws already attached.
When replacing cabinet handles or pulls, you must make sure that your new hardware has the same drill centers as your previous model. Otherwise, you will likely be left with extra holes that will need to be patched up or covered with a backplate.
To determine the drill center of your old cabinet hardware, measure the distance between the two drill holes. DO NOT measure the length of the entire handle, as the handle can extend past the drill holes, causing an incorrect assessment of the drill center.
To prevent splitting of solid wood cabinetry and drawers, install all cabinet hardware more than 1” from the cabinet’s edge.
On standard contemporary flat panel doors, knobs should be installed 1-1/2”-2” from the open corner of the cabinet.
On standard contemporary flat panel doors, horizontal pulls should be installed 2”-4” from the bottom of the cabinet and 2” from the open edge of the cabinet.
In some cases, drawers and cabinet doors in the same kitchen require different screw lengths. Most cabinet doors are built of ¾” lumber, which will accommodate the hardware’s standard 1” screw. Drawers with applied faces, however, may be thicker, and will likely require longer screws. Take note of what your needs will be before placing your order - if necessary, you can request longer screws when you make your purchase.
